Jay is the creator of the CLIMBER leadership system, a system that translates coaching into measurable business and engineering results (Coaching Mindset, Leadership Behavior, Integrated Execution, Management Discipline, Business Alignment, Engineering Excellence, and Results). At TopOut Coaching and Consulting, CLIMBER serves as the guide for the climb, building from a strong coaching mindset to aligned leadership and execution, and ultimately to measurable results.
CLIMBER is a structured leadership system that turns leadership coaching into measurable improvements in engineering performance and business outcomes. It integrates leadership development, agile execution discipline, and systems thinking to improve how organizations lead, operate, and deliver in complex environments.
Unlike traditional leadership models, CLIMBER is designed specifically for complex organizations where leadership quality directly affects execution, technical performance, and risk.
The model follows a clear progression, building on the previous element to ultimately drive measurable results:
-
C — Coaching Mindset: Leaders shift from directive problem-solving toward developing people, ownership, and creative thinking.
-
L — Leadership Behaviors: Leaders change how they show up - building trust, creating psychological safety, and setting clear expectations to enable creativity, ownership, and execution.
-
I — Integrated Execution: Work flows across teams, functions, and systems with clear interfaces, reducing friction, clarifying dependencies, and enabling coordinated delivery in complex environments.
-
M — Management Discipline: Performance is actively managed through clear metrics, accountability, and structured operating rhythms that reinforce execution.
-
B — Business Alignment: Leadership and execution connect directly to strategic priorities, mission outcomes, and enterprise value.
-
E — Engineering Excellence: Technical rigor, systems thinking, and disciplined engineering practices are embedded to produce reliable, high-performing, and verifiable system outcomes.
-
R — Results: Measurable improvements in delivery performance, quality, decision speed, team effectiveness, and early risk identification.
CLIMBER strengthens engineering organizations by increasing decision velocity, reducing rework, and surfacing risk earlier through leadership that is both psychologically safe and execution focused.
